Birthday, DefCon 15 and the Aftermath
OH BOY, OH BOY, OH BOY…. This past weekend was something else.
Not only was it my birthday and I got half of the things on my wishlist (books, camera and shure e3c), but I also went to Vegas for DefCon 15
and participated in the aCTF III as "Robots Get Wedgies Too". We got 3rd place in that thing and we loved it, considering we didn’t do much practice/preparation for the thing other than show up in Vegas
. You can see the photos from the trip. It was 4 days of booze, hacking, no sleep and more booze
, not that I am complaining but lets just say that we spent the flight back and the following day doing nothing but sleeping. One thing I am totally disappointed in is my inability (well maybe inability is a bit strong but more… rustyness) to work some of the tools I was trying to use, but at least now I know to not relay on automation tools for SQL Injections and just remember the damn SQL syntax so we don’t spend half the day doing a clicking war against the other teams.
Although aCTF is not as crazy involved as the official Kenshoto CTF, it is still a mind boggling contest. The guys at dc949 did not let us off easy, one of the services involved you recognizing that a bunch of gibberish was a wav file (the header was stripped so you really need to know how wav gibberish looks
when "cat"ed) that you need to copy paste and play in order to figure out what to type in order to get the service. So I must definitely give those guys a shout out for putting on a great contest that is not as lame as everyone at DC thinks, it is definitely not all about running nessus and metasploit and clicking random buttons.
After this whole fiasco I am now headed to the beach for a week, which is going to be an awesome ending to the summer.
